What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes, similar to a wiffle ball, on a court about one-third the size of a tennis court. It’s typically played as a doubles game (with four players) but can also be played one-on-one (singles). The game combines elements of tennis and ping-pong, making it easy for beginners to pick up quickly, yet challenging enough for experienced players to enjoy. What is great about pickleball, is that it is a sport that can be played by all ages! Here at Flyte Racquet Club our players span all ages!

How to Play Pickleball: The Basics

  1. Court and Setup:

    • The court is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long, with a non-volley zone (called the "kitchen") near the net.

    • Players stand on either side of the net, with the server standing behind the baseline.

  1. Starting the Game:

    • The game starts with an underhand serve diagonally across the court. The serve must be hit below the waist and land within the opponent's designated service area.

    • The first team to score 11 points with at least a two-point lead wins the game.

  2. Rules of Play:

    • Double-Bounce Rule: After the serve, the receiving team must let the ball bounce once before hitting it back, and the serving team must let it bounce once before hitting it back. After that, the ball can be hit in the air or after a bounce.

    • Non-Volley Zone (Kitchen): Players cannot step into the kitchen (the area within 7 feet of the net) to hit a volley. This rule encourages longer rallies and prevents spiking at the net.

  3. Scoring:

    • Only the serving team can score points. If the serving team faults, the serve goes to the other team. Games are typically played to 11 points.
